Q&A: Adam Mather from ‘Make Way For Man’

Make Way For Man released their EP ‘Evolve & Repair’ a few months back and in support of this they are heading on tour throughout July. Bassist Adam answered some of our more personal questions about the band and what to expect when you see them live next month.

You released your EP ‘Evolve & Repair’ a few months back, how has the response been so far?

I think positive is the best word to describe it, the feedback has been very rewarding and makes us work harder to produce more for the people that like it.

Why did you chose “We Will Surely Drown” as your first single release?

It was actually a natural choice by the whole band, it was the standout track that we felt explained us the best if we only had one song to showcase the EP with.

You have said ‘Evolve & Repair’ is about mankind and the positives and negative effects we have on each other and our surroundings. Is there a story behind this?

It can be taken in many ways but we feel it’s around taking the negative effects in life whether it be depression, abuse, etc. and adding a positive spin on it, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, working through the bad times and coming out evolved & repaired from it.

What track are you most excited to play live?

Instruments is probably the fav live song, its heavy and gets the blood & adrenaline flowing.

You’re kicking off you EP tour next month, how are you feeling?

Bloody excited to be honest, getting on a plane with your mates and hitting parts of the country that isn’t your hometown is always a great feeling, it’s like a holiday and we are doing what we love.

What can fans expect from your live performance?

Energy & lots of it! With 6 members putting in 110% throughout the whole performance there is always something to look at and hone into.

What do you miss the most while on tour?

The comfort of your own bed! Sleeping in buses between shows is not the most perfect setup!

What genre do you think Make Way for Man fits into? Or maybe you have made your own.

We seem to have been labeled as Progressive metal core, it’s hard to really give it anything specific as we feel each song is slightly different and we are not writing to a rule set, its whatever happens. With so many members listening to so many different genres I feel we won’t lock ourselves in.

Because Make Way for Man features members from 3 different bands, do you think this makes it easier when it comes to writing new material or does it sometimes cause clashes?

Its 6 of one half a dozen of the other really! Having all these different influences is awesome and it’s what makes us sound the way we do and there are never ending ideas but it’s also open to a lot of opinion so it takes time to get each song right so we are all happy with the end product.

What has been your greatest accomplishment as a band so far?

Opening for Trivium for our debut show!

When you are relaxing what music do you play in the background?

Everybody in the band would be different but for me, I find the heavier music calms me down, Meshuggah is a good one, I can zoom out with it.

Tell us something no one knows about you?

We have all known each other for 10 years+ and we have NEVER seen John’s (vocal beard

man) chin, we are convinced he was born with a beard.

What’s the worst piece of life advice you have ever received?

Someone said to John once “You’d be so much more handsome if you shaved your beard”
