Q&A || Stepson

5 piece melodic-hardcore band from Brisbane Stepson have just dropped their brand new single Come With Me with an accompanying video clip, and to celebrate they are heading on tour! We decided to have a chat to find out more about their tour, music and band life.

Describe Stepson with 5 adjectives.

Energetic, partygoing, passionate and fun loving top-blokes

You guys have just released a brand new single and announced an upcoming tour, how are you feeling right now?

Its always reinvigorating putting out new music, especially since its been quite some time since we have released new music. Motivation is peaking right now and we are really looking forward to shaking up the setlist and playing the new tune live!

Your new single ‘Come With Me’ is being talked about by Alternative Press in the US, played on Short. Fast. Loud. (and praised by Josh Merriel), Did you expect your single would explode this quickly?

Its always reinvigorating putting out new music, especially since its been quite some time since we have released new music. Motivation is peaking right now and we are really looking forward to shaking up the setlist and playing the new tune live!

What themes musically and lyrically did you try to tackle with ‘Come With Me’?

Come With Me is about the constant self-deprecation you face when you think you aren’t good enough for some one you truly care about. Brock’s lyrics are part of what connects people with our music and its been cool to see people making their own connections with this track to our previous single Never Mind Me.

Musically we just wanted something that sounded a bit darker, for lack of a better word, than some of our previous releases to give the whole song a certain aesthetic we hadn’t really experimented with before

You also released a music video along with the single, who filmed this and what was the idea behind it?

Adrian and the team at Splat Studios have done 3/4 of our videos and did a killer job as always!

Who has the most influence during the writing process, or is it all pretty even?

I write a majority of the guitar and bass but brock takes care of the lyrical components. That being said we all put in our two cents once the demoing process is done and we all chip in with changes to structure, riffs, transitions, vocal phrasings etc so we are all happy with the final product.

You tour kicks off at the end of this month, what are you looking forward to the most?

I think doing a headline run for the first time since September will be interesting to see how reception and crowds have developed since then. We did a support run with Storm the Sky in March and that was the most overwhelming response to live shows we have ever received so we are excited to see if that continues! We are looking forward to play the new song too, its always fun to mix up the setlist a bit so that’s probably the other thing I am looking forward to most!

How did you choose Stateside & Aburden to be your support acts for this tour?

We played a few shows with Aburden on the Storm the Sky run and we clicked instantly so we definitely wanted more time to hang out with those guys! Stateside have also been making waves of their own and having two bands with hype, new releases and solid music behind them made them easy choices to support us on our set of shows.

What venue are you most pumped to play at?

Both Brisbane venues are a blast to play but venues like Bang! which we have never played before are also the types of shows we love to play, new experiences are always awesome! Canberra is always a really good time as well despite the cold and its been quite some time since we have played the Basement so that’s another one i am personally looking forward to!

For fans who haven’t seen Stepson before, what can they expect from your live show?

Energy I think is something we try to bring to every show, if the band looks like they’re falling asleep then sometimes the crowd will too so we like to keep everyone in good spirits and engaged! We are extremely lucky in that a lot of people that enjoy our music like to have a sing or a crowd surf at a show so that participation is the most exciting thing about our shows i reckon!

When you are relaxing what music do you listen to in the background?

We all have different chill out music. Always depends on the time and place but I think I speak for all of us (Minus Brock, rob and Jayden) when I say if you mashed our relaxing music together it would be the Fast and the Furious original soundtrack.

What is the worst piece of life advice you have ever received?

Money wont buy you happiness (umm Fifa 17 costs like 100 bucks and have you ever played through a BOSS Metalzone pedal? Tell me that piece of dirt is making you happy…)
