Review || BIGSOUND Live 2019 || Night #3

BIGSOUND Night #3 was full of some crazy adventures. From venue to venue running around like an absolute maniac I managed to catch some seriously incredible bands that I’m surprised aren’t huge stars yet. From all female indie pop acts to hip hop to psychedelic rock I got to experience them all and here are my highlights!

ERTHLINGS

Sydney all female 4 piece Erthlings were the first act to kick off my Bigsound night 3 and they were incredible. Playing just after 9pm at The Foundry, the girls managed to rope in a decent sized crowd of both super fans and newbies but everyone in the room was so alive with support. Playing tracks such as Bridges and Dawn, the Erthlings electro indie pop sound generated such a chill vibe throughout the whole venue. There wasn’t a still body in the room as everyone swayed side to side and roared with applause at the end of every song. Lead singer Issy was so shy and overwhelmed between songs when she heard the cheers coming from the crowd but as soon as she started to sing she transformed into this beautiful confident woman and she made it impossible to look away. Lissa (Drums), Taylor (Bass) and Jessame (Guitar) were all also incredibly talented, no one had in ears, they weren’t playing to a click track it was completely mental. These girls have been playing songs together since they were 8 years old and you could definitely tell by the way they trusted each other and vibed off each other on the stage. Erthlings finished with single Cuts & Bruises, like all their other tracks it was met with a super positive response from the crowd and the girls left the stage gob smacked and to be honest so did we.

BETWEEN YOU & ME

I only managed to catch a few songs by Melbourne pop punk outfit Between You & Me, but for time that I was there they rocked it. Every member of the band looked like they were having the time of their lives, running around the stage and playing their hearts out. Lead singer Jake was a very captivating front man, at the best of times I found it hard to look away because he was putting so much effort into his performance. Playing tracks such as Dakota and Broken, the crowd were feeding off their good vibe tunes with their cameras out bobbing their heads to the beat. Between You & Me were super appreciative of the people who turned out to see them and from the snippet I saw they definitely deserved all the attention.

BUTTERFINGERS

Brisbane rap rock group Butterfingers were already at full force when I finally made it to the Zoo, so without a minute to spare I grabbed a drink and joined the dance floor. With a packed out room full of sweaty and crazy fans, Butterfingers pumped out tunes full of pounding bass and popping key samples that was setting the room alight. Playing tracks such as Get Up Outta Tha Dirt and FIGJAM the boys leapt around the stage like mad men and the crowd sung along at the top of their lungs. Butterfingers also played a new track that was much different to the songs they have previously recorded but it was still met with open arms and it was still a dope track. The vibe for their entire set was completely electric, its hard to put into words just how privileged I felt to be apart of all the action. Butterfingers are performers not just musicians, they made every moment count whether it was a head band, a lyric spoke or the chance to connect with their fans that made every second count. But what I enjoyed the most was how much fun it was to rock out to their tracks. From the minute I walked in the room I danced and so did everyone else. It was a hip hop rock party and the boys killed it.

G FLIP

Melbourne indie pop superstar G Flip was next level insane. I’m kicking myself for not discovering her earlier because she tore the roof off during her set at Famous Nightclub. There was nothing stopping this girl once she took to the stage, it was raw and passionate musicianship at its finest. Dressed like your average skater chick, you wouldn’t expect the angel like sound of her voice to come flowing out over top of her killer electro tracks but it does and its beautiful. G Flip doesn’t only sing either, she also rocks the drums like a pro and during single I Am Not Afraid she grabbed some sticks and played a set of self standing drums to the beat while singing at a completely different tempo. The crowd was gob smacked and so was I, I’m still trying to work out how she could manage so many different rhythms at the same time. At the end of her set G Flip stated “This is where it all began” before playing her most popular and breakthrough track About You. The crowd lost their minds dancing and singing to the beat while G Flip leaped around the stage connecting with her fans from the very front to the back. Just when you thought her set couldn’t get any better, G Flip performed a killer drum solo over About You ending her Bigsound appearance on a massive high.

PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

Perth sci-fi rockers Psychedelic Porn Crumpets were out of this world. They were perhaps the band I was most excited to see that night and I’m happy to say they did not disappoint. The Crowbar was absolutely jam packed with people, there was so little room that fans were quite literally hanging from the rafters and standing on the booths and chairs just to be able to see. Although it was late, PPC generated an energy like no other and they managed to explode it all through the Crowbar from the noose bleeds to the exit huggers. Playing tracks such as Marmalade March, Social Candy and their most popular and my person favourite Cornflake, the boys threw their bodies to the beat flipping their long hair everywhere and leaping around like mad men. The crowd transformed into a sweaty pit of dancing and screaming lunatics, it was as if PPC’s music had possessed them and the music was in control of everyone’s movements. The boys made it look so easy, although their hands were moving at the speed of light they were so relaxed and every moment flowed perfectly into the next. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets tunes are so infectious and addictive its like a drug, and now I just can’t get enough.

Till next year Bigsound!
