Osaka Punch ‘Death Monster Super Squad’ EP Review

Brisbane super funk sci-fi hardcrumpers Osaka Punch have just dropped their highly anticipated EP ‘Death Monster Super Squad’ set for release on September 16th. And… OMGGGGGGG!!

First up you have to catch these bad boys live and in the flesh. Take this killer EP, turn it up by 6 billion, chuck in some stand up comedy and you have one live event you cannot miss. I’m serious, there would be crying involved.

Just as disjointed and crazy as they they sound, Osaka Punch still take you on a whimsical journey with their music. From one song to another you are transported and every time is a surprise at where you might end up as they tackle any music genre with the ease of a genius. This EP has 7 tracks representing 7 characters in the ‘Death Monster Super Squad’, which is basically a f**ked up grotesque Avengers. ‘Death Monster Super Squad’ is a perfect example of how much care Osaka Punch takes into making each track more individual than the next. Make The Call & Stonk were both released as singles prior to this EP masterpiece and they are absolute beasts.  As the super villains for this EP, although grotesque will pull you out of the depths of hell we call modern superficial music.

Sci-fi and spooky Make The Call is a whole different species of an angry alien invasion track. Whipping the listener in with his incredible vocal range, lead singer Jack hits us with his techno synth keys as the band serves up an ice cold plate of catchy notes and raunchy riffs. Stonk on the other hand is just so damn catchy. Just like their music video you really do want to start playing air guitar and dancing in the supermarket no matter what looks you are given. Featuring the umpth of an anthemist rock track but with the modern feel of a pop song, chuck in some anger, add a little synth pop and you have Stonk.

To change it up just that bit more you have the 7th track on the album Spider and the Fly and its just beautiful. Nothing as angry and pumpy as the tracks before but keeping that underlining synthy sound that makes Osaka Punch so unique, the flowy lyrics makes you sway more than smash things.Recording this beast in the UK  over the last 12 months, Osaka Punch should be super proud that they took their time and released this monster EP that we just can’t get enough of.

This EP is anger, its funk, its rock, its crazy. It veers on the heavy side until your half way through a song and it shifts to a classic day dream.’Death Monster Super Squad’ is basically the best of everything music shoved into a 7 track journey on the groove train to f**k knows ville. And trust me I’m booking a seat on on the train with Osaka Punch and leaving.

A master manipulator, and leader of the Death Monster Super Squad. A sociopath by nature and a criminal since birth; as an infant he convinced his own mother that she was a pear, and the only cure was to listen to George Michael’s Greatest Hits on repeat. This led to her untimely death, and only 2 months later his father was admitted to Sir Joey-Ross Chandler’s Hospital for the Psychiatrically Less-Endowed, where he would spend the rest of his life throwing his own poo at doctors.

By the time he was a teenager, ‘Make the Call’ was in Alaska selling ice to Eskimos. This led to an extreme methamphetamine problem in the Arctic Circle, and after an 8 year manhunt, he was eventually arrested and expedited to his home-town of Dubbo, NSW. After spending precisely 13 seconds in prison, he managed to escape, and has been wanted by authorities ever since.

A highly revered and feared mobster in the criminal underworld, it is said that if you hear the faint whistle of ‘Careless Whisper’ on the wind, Harry ‘Make the Call’ Manhattan is near, and your time is up.’

Listen to this EP, let loose and play some bloody air guitar and for the love of god DO NOT MISS your chance to see Osaka Punch live with Dead Letter Circus next month.
