Stop 3/3: Waitomo Glow Worm Caves

Unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos during the cave tour so the only photo I have is one I’ve stolen off the internet. BOOOOO

But the caves were incredible! Our young Maori tour guide made for a god laugh and also sung us a traditional Maori love song in a section of the caves that has absolutely no echo. He explained that school choirs and some famous singers have performed in that very section to a sold old number of 200 people.

I did in fact get a little claustrophobic down there as most of the time the path was very dark and you are under ground so at times it did become a bit much.

We then continued our decent to lower ground again before being placed on a boat to glide through the glow worms via the river. The walls and roof were lined with little tiny blue lights that show and sparkled and moved throughout our entire boat ride. Our tour guide also shone a light on the little strings of silk that the glow worms had placed to dangle from the roof to collect food (bugs etc)

It was truly amazing and something I had thought I would never see.
