Stop 2/3 : Rotorua Geysers & Mud Pools

Second stop on our bus trip was Rotorua where we went to the geysers and mud pools at Te Puia. The steam kept us warm the site of all the natural thermal pools were amazing. We walked around the tracks and even came across a hangi being prepared in a box over steam and covered in rice stacks to cook all the food. Watching over the mud-pools as the burped and splashed they smelt but also produced the noise of something similar to stirring a bowl of macaroni and cheese. I thought the venue would smell much worse than it did from what i had heard but it was fun and id never seen anything like it before.

Traditionally, Māori cooked in a pit under the ground in ovens called ‘hangi’. In traditional hangi cooking, food such as fish and chicken, and root vegetables such as kumara (sweet potato), are cooked in a pit dug in the ground.
